NB: The young couple signed their names in strong clear handwriting in the ministers records and the surname was then, and always thereafter, spelt POPPELWELL. They lived at Dockwray Square, North Shields, after their marriage.
Mr William Poppelwell and Mrs Elizabeth Bell both of this parish were married in this Church by license but with the consent of those whose consent is required by law this 14th day of November 1779.

Matthew became a Ship Owner, Alderman & Mayor. Partner in Bell, Bell and Poppelwell. In 1854 he opened the Tynemouth Pier at the entrance to the River Tyne, and he also had a street named after him, Popplewell Terrace, but the local council did not spell his name correctly.

Whitby, North Yorkshire in an ancient fishing port that nestles between the North York Moors and the North Sea at the mouth of the River Esk. It was once the main whaling port for the North of England. The towns skyline is dominated by the ruins of St Hilda's Abbey.
